Cottage: America’s Favorite Home Inside and Out

The humble cottage offers a place of calming retreat and the opportunity to express a proud sense of individuality. In this timeless photographic treasury, the authors shine light on three charming characteristics that unify all cottages: a connection to nature, an intimately scaled design, and the use of locally made materials. They explore 24 superb American examples of all types-permanent homes and weekend getaways in rural, suburban, and urban locations, new cottages and remodels-discussing site planning, vernacular building materials, roof pitches, window sizes, interior design, and garden styles. Emphasizing current and future trends, “Cottage” is a storybook fantasy come alive.

Cottage: America’s Favorite Home Inside and Out Reviews

Review by SZH:

This is a high quality, pretty book. The photographs are lovely and the authors obviously put some effort into this project. BUT I would NOT automatically recommend this cottage book to cottage-loving friends. There is a very sterile feel to all of the “cottages” that remind me more of a metropolitan apartment, rather than a cozy cottage. This may appeal greatly to many people and that if fine. I personally prefer the cottage books that show not only exceptional restoration and decorating, but also that bring out the whimsy, individualism, and sense of home in the most comforting, warm and intimate way. The cottages in this book look like show homes. Something to impress vistors with. The writing is a bit pretentious, though maybe that is unfair because I didn’t read much….didn’t want to. For those who like a more funky or artistic cottage style, this book may not be for you. Check it out of the library first before buying if you are the more bolder, whimiscal, individualist, artistic type of cottage loving person. If you like sterile and non-controversial you would probably like this book.

Review by Diogenes:

If you are looking for small scale, cozy cottages you will be disappointed. For example, at page 37 there is a very comtemporary box style, three story structure, perhaps 2,800 square feet; the facade is deceptively board and batten, painted barn red. The living/dining/kitchen is one big open room, perhaps 36′ by 14′ with a 16′ high ceiling. One outside wall, 36 by 16, is glass, which is impressive, but not conducive to an intimate, cozy milieu.

At page 77 there is a three story prefab ‘art moderne’ structure that makes an impressive architectural statement, but it is by no stretch a “cottage”.

At page 187 is a remodeled barn: it’s three stories, all open inside, ceilings 16 feet or more high, with a wall of glass. It’s certainly not a cottage. It doesn’t even look much like a barn anymore.

The book cover suggests “each of the cottages is intimately scaled, seamlessly linked to the landscape…”, which is just merchandising, promotional nonsense. For the most part these structures are just large houses, ego statements for the owner and architect. The authors are revisionists, changing the meaning of ‘cottage’ to include whatever they wished to put in their book.

Waterside Cottages

Cottages near the water tend to be snug and modest, with exteriors painted in sun-reflecting whites, nautical blues, or playful colors. The interiors of these houses likewise avoid formality in favor of a casual approach. Cozy cottages from coast to coast

Cottages Reviews

Review by d pfeif:

I am all over any type of cottage themed book, so this was definitly going to be on my bookshelf. the pictues are really nice but the only thing that stood out when I first sat down with this book is how the author pretty much limited himself to one particular island on the east coast. There are about 5 or 6 cottages all from this one island, and all were fixed up by the same lady who rescues run down houses and breathes new life in them. Very cute and quaint for sure, but I almost felt like the book should have been titled “Cottages of ” ” Island”. Because I ordered this book without being able to look at it first, I was a little disappointed, but all in all the cottages profiled are dear and sweet, so regardless of how many are within a few miles of each other, I will hold onto the book for decorating and color ideas.

Review by Poyye:

It was easy to sit down and read a “cottage a day”. Of course, I was not impressed with all, especially the non-traditional cottages. I was able to fine tune my likes and dislikes more with the book as there were beautiful pictures of insides and outsides and a nice write-up of history and descriptions.

Most spoke “money” or were vacation/second homes. Many of the cottages featured were preserved and restored which I admire. I loved the simple furnishings in some and occasionally would catch a new idea for myself. I just wish that I could afford them. The book made a nice advertisement for Tybee Cottage Rentals. It is a great book for people who like to drool over those who “have”.

Cottages on the Coast: Fair Harbors and Secret Shores

With her successful books Cottages by the Sea and Coastal Retreats, Linda Leigh Paul has beautifully captured the dream home in an ideal setting. Now she broadens her scope by visiting the most picturesque and private seaside cottages on all three coasts of the United States, from the cliffs of Big Sur to the dunes of Nantucket to Florida’s sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. The most charming cottages in the country are here, including a 1924 stone cottage in Carmel, a weathered clapboard cottage on the Isle of Hope, Georgia, and Tennessee Williams’s Key West cottage.

Seaside cottages are intrepid structures. They hold onto the earth as a brace against heavy seas, furious flood tides, and stormforce winds. The names themselves conjure departures and returns, danger and escape: Destruction Island, Peril Strait, and Wrath Cape describe one arc of shoreline. Another coastline offers Fair Harbor, Port Protection, and Safety Harbor. Still another speaks of lost encounters: Dogs Keys Pass, Tortugas Harbor, and Alligator Reef. But the interiors of these cottages evoke only warmth and beauty, providing comfort for those eternally drawn to the sea. Many display artifacts of life on the water: nautical objects and treasures found on the beach, as well as journals, letters, postcards, and books that reflect the long, rich history of seaside living.

Cottages on the Coast: Fair Harbors and Secret Shores Reviews

Review by Manon Kavesky:

Wherever they are located, seaside dwellings share several common traits. These hearty homes are crafted from tried and true materials that age gracefully in the sea air and reflect local building traditions and styles. They balance the storms of winter with the peaceful days of summer and maximize beautiful views whatever the season.Cottages on the Coast presents an extensive variety of homes from sea to shining sea. Linda Leigh Paul selected more than 25 examples from Bainbridge Island, to Big Sur, from the Florida Keys, to Tybee Island, and north to Maine. You will be captivated by hundreds of beautiful photographs of vernacular exteriors and very personal interiors. Cottages on the Coast stands out because the interiors and exteriors exude a lot of personality, and they seem authentic and attainable. New England is well represented with houses in Maine, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. The tranquil cover image, Treasure Cottage on Key West is truly a cottage at a mere 500 square feet. Treasure Cottage is filled with the owners carefully arranged antique collection, which does not clutter the small space but gives the home so much personality. Other examples, a modernist cottage designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright pupil in Carmel, complete with loads of natural light, and built-in furnishings. Or a cottage recently built on a private island in the Puget Sound, built on a solid rock foundation, with enormous interior beams to withstand the fiercest storms, decorated in a simple manner re-using found materials such as driftwood for a mantel and stair case railing.Cottages on the Coast will be a source of inspiration for readers who are considering rehabbing, designing, or decorating a seaside dwelling. Or if you are an avid armchair traveler Cottages on the Coast will fill you with travel ideas for your next coastal break.

When I picked up this book I was surprised to find it so filled with a wonderful variety of cottages. Cottages on the Coast is a small and wonderful glimpse of styles around the coasts of the United States. A small “photo album” near the beginning shows early pictures of some of the cottages that are featured later and as those same cottages appear today. A great selection of cottage styles, representing different regions of the country, are fascinating with their accompanying stories. This is a book I will go back to over and over again, to look up something I remember, to find something new and to just plop down with it in my lap for pure beach imaginings. I love this book!

The Enchanted Cottage

After a crash disfigures his face and maims his body, pilot Oliver Bradford (Robert Young) hides from family and friends in a seaside cottage. There he befriends homely, gentle Laura Pennington (Dorothy McGuire). The two marry for companionship – until some rare magic within the cottage transforms them into ardent and beautiful lovers. Director John Cromwell’s delicate, achingly romantic film is based on Sir Arthur Wing Pinero’s play, written in a post-World War I era of broken men returning to families who could not recognize them. When history sadly repeated itself, World War II film audiences likewise embraced a story of the transcendent power of love. The film so moved Young that he named his own California home The Enchanted Cottage. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. The Enchanted Cottage Reviews

Review by :

This unforgettable film is for lovers of love stories. THE ENCHANTED COTTAGE contains the message that true love is etched in the human heart and beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Young is an embittered, suicidal and facially disfigured WWI veteran who meets McGuire, a girl so plain that no one would look at her twice. They eventually marry and move into a secluded cottage which is enchanted by the love found within its walls by its previous occupants over the years: it is a Honeymoon cottage of which Natwick knows to contain a legendary spell. Slowly and miraculously, through their love for each other, the couple find each-other immensely attractive to each other: Young has regained his youthful handsomeness and McGuire is blossomed into a great beauty. The film’s theme of love’s triumph over adversity was cruelly attacked by many critics in 1945, but the story is beautifully handled, written and tastefully acted. Young and McGuire underplay their roles which would easily have been labled histrionic in less capable hands. In supporting roles, Mildred Natwick and Herbert Marshall are fine. First filmed as the silent FOREVER in 1924 with Richard Barthelmess and May McAvoy, this was Robert Young’s personal favourite of all his movies.

Review by KittyKins:

I can’t say enough about this film. It is absolutely outstanding with fantastic acting by Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire. I taped it off television years ago and was absolutely mesmerized the first time I watched it. It continues to have an impact on me each time I see it. It’s a story about beauty being in the eye of the beholder and shatters the idea that beauty is only in outward appearance. Kindness is presented as a most important virtue. It is suspenseful in parts and the nature of the cottage’s enchantment is not revealed until the end of the movie. Not a coincidence that the couple’s best friend is a blind man who truly sees them as they are. It’s a nice romantic movie. Who could ever replace Robert Young? Too bad it’s not presently available on DVD or at least more readily available on VHS. I also wonder if it was ever colourized. Oh yeah, it is in B & W, but you don’t really notice that while watching it as it is so interesting.

Feb. 2005 – I’m editing this review because I just found out that there is a cut and uncut release of the video. I recently purchased a copy of the 1972 release and found out that it is shorter than the one I taped off TV. This one is 78 minutes and two scenes from the beginning of the movie, when Oliver tries to commit suicide and when Laura goes to the party and no one will dance with her, were cut. They are probably the most depressing parts in the movie, but should have been included. *The uncut version is 91 minutes.* I am editing this because I am concerned that some sellers are selling the cut version for very high prices. So, let the buyer beware. Let’s hope the DVD is released before not too long, and that the whole movie is included. I’m sorry I didn’t realize this earlier.

Vintage Cottages Reviews

Review by Gail Dedrick:

I had high expectations for this book. Had I realized it was written by the same author as Camps and Cottages, I may have thought twice before I bought it.

Just like its sister book, Camps and Cottages, Vintage Cottages features California cottages exclusively. That should have been reflected in the title or subtitle.

Secondly, the photography disappointed. Too many little heavily styled micro views of bookcases and table tops. I longed for wider shots to get a better sense of the whole house.

And last, the spaces feel artificial to me. A heavy stylist’s hand is evident in many of the photos. There is even an obvious product placement of the author’s other book, Camps and Cottages.

If you are interested in real vintage cottages, spaces where people really live, the book to get is The Cottage Book: Living Simple and Easy.

Review by Saturday’s Child of My Petite Maison:

We love this book. So many excellent ideas. Our family being animal people, absolutely love that this book is dedicated to Buddy who happened to be at the right place at the right time. The cottages are beautiful as well as the landscapes and the celebration of four-legged friends is a beautiful plus!

This is an item we accidentally happened upon due to recommendation from previous purchases. We will certainly integrate some of the ideas in our tiny cottage as well with much enthusiasm. Very nice reading indeed and beautiful photography. It sits with pride on our coffee table for when the need for inspiration hits.

New Cottage Home

The New Cottage Home taps into today’s move toward lifestyle simplicity and the idea that living space should be rich in details, conservative of resources, and no larger than necessary. Jim Tolpin celebrates the diversity and charm of 30 sample cottages, from a Pacific Northwest cottage modeled after a French hunting lodge to a “salvage yard vernacular cottage” built with junkyard materials. Each featured home reflects individual personality, priorities, and lifestyle. Whether by the water, on a mountain, or in a forest, field, or town, these homes emphasize quality of place over quantity of space. It takes only a drive through any typical American subdivision to confirm that in recent decades the average house has grown in size, narrowed in style, and shrunk in vision. Jim Tolpin’s The New Cottage Home represents a return to a previous school of thought about living space: that it should be no larger than is needed, conservative of resources, rich in detail– in short, that it should pay homage to honest architecture and fine craftsmanship, not to conspicuous consumption. The 30 cottage homes pictured, all recently built, have the slightly unfair advantage of almost magically beautiful locations, but each has a unique character and many cottage-style nooks and crannies: the converted island pump house with sod roof, the 600-square-foot woodland temple, the salvage-built house on the Kansas prairie, the off-the-grid shingled hilltop house built to take advantage of natural light. Tolpin does an excellent job of pulling together the elements of each that make it a cottage and make it appealing. In his own words, “These houses seem to call as much to the heart as to the head, enriching us more with the highs of nature than

New Cottage Home Reviews

Review by :

Browsing through a big name book store one day, I happened upon “The New Cottage Home”. I’m not sure why I picked it up because having a home of our own is so far into the future for my husband and I, that I try not to tease myself and in turn not think about it. But I flipped through the book anyway and fell in love with it almost immediatly! We rushed home knowing that Amazon would be cheaper and ordered it that same day. I was amazed at all the tricky, unique architecture ideas and styles. It is filled with easy-to-understand language and descriptions. I also found it refreshing that Mr. Tolpin wrote like he was speaking to you as if in conversation and not at a college lecture. He covers many different home styles and addresses the importance of the use of indiginous materials to tie the look of your home to your surroundings. I like how he stresses trying to make your home look as if it “grew” where you built it and has been there forever. Along with little pieces of history used as teaching tools he also describes many of the homes attributes from an artistic point-of-view(ie. the use of vertical windows ties in with the tall pines surrounding the home, hiding the garage from frontal view of the home and focusing on the “human sized entry way” makes a person feel welcome and curious to step into the cozyness of your home etc…). I like how he included tight- budget homes reliant on alternative sources of energy all the way to the retiring couple who needed less space but were financially ready to spend half a billion but knew they didn’t need or have to. In conclusion, I would recommend this book for anyone interested in building, dreaming(!) or looking for decorating ideas that really work. A definate must-have!

Review by :

New Cottage Home took me to some of the homes I knew I was always meant to live in. There’s a wonderful section of the history of the cottage style, and what design details create that warm feeling when we see such a home. Modern cottages are meant to retain the structural and detail essentials of the older cottages but to allow more interior open space due to modern materials and construction methods. Most of the book is given over to examples, with the architects names and addresses listed (very useful!). Some of the examples did not stick to the “cottage essentials” in my mind, but the rest were so charming it made up for it. I hope more architects see this book and take up the challenge of designing the small, detail-oriented home that singles and empty nesters would be proud to live in. I’m already imagining my cottage garden.

Review by Mrs. Judith Snow:

I selected this item from a shower gift registry. The store didn’t stock it. I’d have to order it from them on line and then it would take up to 4 weeks to be delivered. Having made several other purchases through Amazon and my orders always arriving within a few days, I didn’t hesitate to order two sets. The price was better than the local discount stores. The dishes arrived well packaged and in plenty of time for the shower.

Review by Francois Rouaix:

We bought two sets of 4. We had a few issues in getting packages without anything broken, but Amazon’s customer service handled all the returns gracefully. The plates and bowls are light but robust, so I finally could allow my toddler to empty the dishwasher with me…

Overall, these do a good job in our every day life, and we’re saving the more expensive, hard-to-replace Mikasa stoneware for the special occasions.

500 Cottages Reviews

Review by M. Vacha:

Wow… well I must say that I really feel “taken”!! Both Taunton Press and Keister have done excellent work in the past, so I did not think twice about purchasing the book… Unfortunately I did not pay attention to the SIZE! I fully expected this to be a picture book because that was how it was advertised. But I assumed it would be 8″x10″ like similar Taunton publications. Did it do what it set out to do? Yes. It is a picture book about cottages. I did not expect the book to be 5″ x 6″ — less than half the size of normal books. This is a “post card book”. Buyer Beware– This book is tiny!

Review by Lolalu:

This is a small book with a lot of delightful images. To me it feels like sitting down in Doug Keister’s studio and rummaging through a box of photos. The houses aren’t in order so if you see one you like, you may come across it again from a different angle in a hundred pages. It’s an eclectic group ranging from gingerbread to the stone extravaganzas of Earl Young in Charlevoix, MI.

“500 Cottages” is short on text (and context) but it doesn’t claim to be a comprehensive history. It’s reasonably priced eye candy, the sort of thing one can set out that guests will grab and page through. It afforded me considerable pleasure and quite a few smiles of recognition as I flipped the pages from one enticing photo to the next. I’d been to his site at and enjoyed a chance to see excellent photos that didn’t make it into his book projects—this (and “500 Bunglaows”) is a more portable way to look at them.

Keister’s outtakes beat most architectural photographer’s best work.
