Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes

The lakeside home represents its owner’s love for the outdoors and passion for life on the water. Houses by the lake are designed to maximize the flow of air, the use of sunlight, and the views of the landscape. These Great Lakes homes range in style from converted barns and Prairie Style houses to modernist inspired dwellings but each is always a reflection of the style, taste and interests of their owners. The houses featured here illustrate an experimentation with materials and an economy of design. Residences are designed to be practical-many can “close up” during adventures in the out-of-doors and travels-and they exhibit an open-minded style in which to live. Great Lakes houses are modern yet sufficiently warm and inviting to provide comfort for life here. Capturing the universal desire to live on the water, the book will speak to waterside homeowners everywhere, and especially to residents of the seven U.S. states and two Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes. With more than 250 images, Lakeside Living is a book for all those who yearn for a life at the water’s edge.

Lakeside Living: Waterfront Houses, Cottages, and Cabins of the Great Lakes Reviews

Review by Vic F.:

This book features many great pictures of homes on or near the Great Lakes. It covers several types of building styles and architectures. Every home looks like a sublime dream. One critique though is that most of the homes are of the spare-no-expense ultra wealthy variety. Even the cabins would be out-of-reach for most people.

Review by j. j. molloy:

The Great Lakes is a phenomenal center of American architecture and design. Little attention has been given

to the creation of the design arts there as a regional vernacular. This short survey should be recognized as

one of the first of many studies surely deserved by the history of the area.

A House on the Water: Inspiration for Living at the Water’s Edge Reviews

Review by :

This is an excellent book for those who dream about that perfect home on the water and those who want to learn more about good design and good architecture. The layouts and photos are wonderful, and in and of themselves provide a tutorial in design excellence.Bob Knight’s prose is accessible and informative in describing the choices each architect faced and what makes their designs work. By avoiding the esoteric and making a straightforward presentation about the design solutions he likes, Knight provides readers with an insight into the design process that may help build their dreams.Books, like good movies and good restaurants, should do what they say they are going to do and do it well. This one does. It provides a thoughful perspective from Knight’s experience as an architect and draws conclusions that the reader can verify or challenge based on the photos, graphics, and their own time on the water.I particularly appreciated the fact that Knight visited each of the homes and that he based his observations on real, not paper architecture.I recommend this book for dreamers and designers. It would make a great fall/winter read on those cold rainy days.

Review by Peter d’Entremont:

I work for Robert Knight. I work for him because he can express ideas about architecture where most architects, and architecture critics cannot. I had no idea I would enjoy this book as much as I did. Robert Knight has a way of drawing you into a design and making it sensible. The houses chosen for this book are as varied as any I have ever seen in a book of this type. The design are uniformly excellent examples representing a wide range of styles and locales. The photography is equally excellent. We expect good photography, and pretty buildings, but these are substantial buildings and Robert Knight has been a most enjoyable guide.
